Publishing is a brutal industry to penetrate. I was fortunate enough to get a leg up from Darf Publishers director Ghassan Fergiani and editor Ghazi Gheblawi, who both embraced my enthusiasm, and were patient enough to teach me the ropes. At Darf Publishers, we published a pretty substantial list of translated literature from countries including Libya, Sudan, Egypt, Morocco, Lebanon, Syria, Eritrea, Italy, Japan and more.
We produced children’s titles, adult fiction as well as some other nonfiction works, all with the same ethos – giving a voice to underrepresented people on English bookshelves. Ghassan’s commitment to the cause lit something in me that I still carry to this day in my work.
