Round Our Way: Sam Hanna's Visual Legacy

By Heather Norris Nicholson | Published by Pendle Press, 2024
 Role: Publisher, Production, Editor

Sam Hanna (1903-96), a pioneering filmmaker from Burnley, Lancashire, was once dubbed the 'Lowry of filmmaking'. This book combines stills, essays and archive photography to document Hanna's unique visual record on film during decades of profound change.

I first came across the work of Sam Hanna when looking through the North West Film Archive, struck by these familiar scenes of east Lancashire when handicrafts and industry was just about still the economic leg-up. I brought historian Heather Norris Nicholson on board as writer and co-researcher, working with the NWFA to gather stills across more than fifty films. The project wouldn't have been possible without funding via Blaze Arts.
